The park and palace complex where half of Warsaw descends on a Sunday to take the traditional family stroll, the name ?azienki means baths and is derived from the park’s centrepiece and best-known attraction, the Palace on the Island. The palace was originally built in the 17th century as a private bathhouse for Stanis?aw Herakliusz Lubomirski, owner of the adjacent Ujazdowski Castle and much of the surrounding land (and much of Poland, come to mention it).
During the Warsaw Uprising in August 1944, more than 85% of Warsaw's historic centre was destroyed by Nazi troops. After the war, a five-year reconstruction campaign by its citizens resulted in today's meticulous restoration of the Old Town, with its churches, palaces and market-place.
Built in the 15th century, when the capital was moved to Warsaw from Krakow, the castle served as seat of the king and the government. It was destroyed completely during World War II. The decision to rebuild Castle Square was made in 1971. Funds for the rebuilding were raised by the community.
THE ARCH CATHEDRAL OF ST John is one of the oldest in the Polish capital. The historic church was almost completely destroyed during World War II.
This statue, made of gunmetal, was erected in April 1939 in Powi?le near the Vistula river. The sculpture is by Ludwika Nitschowa and posed by poet Krystyna Krahelska. Originally, it was to be a 20-metre high sculpture made of glass, placed on a pillar in the middle of the Vistula channel.
Some of Wawel's oldest stone buildings can be traced back to 970 AD, in addition to the earliest examples of Romanesque and Gothic architecture in Poland. The current castle was built in the 14th century, and expanded over the next hundreds of years.
History. According to chronicler Jan D?ugosz, Saint Mary's Basilica in the Main Square in Kraków was founded in 1221–22 by the Bishop of Kraków, Iwo Odrow??. The building was destroyed during the Mongol invasion of Poland. Between 1290 and 1300 the new early Gothic church was built on the remaining foundations.
Upon the German invasion of Poland, the German army occupied Krakow in the first week of September 1939. The German military authorities initiated immediate measures aimed at isolating, exploiting and persecuting the Jews of the city.
History. During the 7th century bce, Greek sailors reached the lower Danube and sailed upstream, conducting a brisk trade. They were familiar with the whole of the river's lower course and named it the Ister. The Danube later served as the northern boundary of the vast Roman Empire and was called the Danuvius.
As dukes, archdukes, and emperors, the Habsburgs ruled Austria from 1282 until 1918. They also controlled Hungary and Bohemia (1526–1918) and ruled Spain and the Spanish empire for almost two centuries (1504–06, 1516–1700).
The National Museum in Prague was founded on April 15, 1818. It was founded by Count Sternberk, the first president of the Society of the Patriotic Museum who served as the trustee and operator of the museum.
The Prague Astronomical Clock was first installed in 1410. This makes it the world's third-oldest astronomical clock and the oldest still in operation today. The lower calendar dial was added in around 1490. Around the same time, the incredible gothic statues were also added.
The Jewish quarter in Prague was established in the 13th century. The Jewish Town was developed as a separate ghetto for Jewish people, only there were they allowed to live, work, and bury their dead. After they were granted citizenship rights in 1848, Jewish people were allowed to settle in other parts of Prague.
On the basis of archaeological research and the oldest written sources, it is thought that Prague Castle was founded around the year 880 by Prince Bo?ivoj of the house of Premyslides. The early medieval castle site was fortified with a moat and a rampart of clay and stones.
Vltava used to be used primarily for log rafting
The source of wood was in the South and South-West of the Bohemian territory and the river was the fastest way to deliver the wood. During the 16th century, the river was also important for the transportation of salt.
